Mori MVJR Build Log 31 Lug 2011 23:59 #12073

I have started an EMC2 build for a Mori Seiki MVJR.
The machine was built in 1986 with an MX2 Control.

I would like to start by thanking everyone that has contributed to the software and all the help that is provided here on this forum.

With my limited electronics experience but good documentation skills, I hope to give back by logging the steps of my build in a way that anyone can follow.

The attached image is a CAD model I made of the chassis, with mother board and Mesa cards and Honda connectors to fit the existing cable ends..

My goal at this point is to come as close as possible to bolting this control in and running it, (OK it's a fantasy)

The parts list so far is:
Mesa:
1 x 5i23
1x 7i48
2x 7i64
1x 7i44 RJ45
2x Custom cables (ask Mesa, the know what you need)
Intel Mother Board:
1X D510MO + 1gb memory
Hard Drive
32 GB solid state
Zumax Power Supply
ZU-400W ATX12V

If anyone needs the following let me know and I can post them:
Original Ladder diagram for the machine and control
CAD models of the parts (close enough for positioning and mounting

I'm nearing the point of pulling the existing control, if you have any advice, please post it.

Is the 7i44 and 7i48 supported by EMC now?

Why use the 5i23 over the 5i20?

My understanding is that 7I44 and 7I48 will be supported by 2.5.

My hardware choice was made drafting behind the research, advice and conclusions the were made on Corys MV35/40 thread.
I had Mesa review the list and they thought it was OK too.

Today I began a spreadsheet listing all the wires and their connections found in the control panel diagrams.
It looks like about 5 evenings work at the moment.

My hope/expectation is that this will make an orderly process of wiring the connectors to the Mesa boards.

I missed that about the 7i44 and 7i48, stuff happens so fast with Mesa hardware it is hard to keep up.

I do remember when I inquired about the 5i23 vs the 5i20 I was told that the 5i23 when used with EMC was an overkill and the extra 200 gates would not be used. But things might have changed and I don't know about it... the only advantage I see is the 5i23 card is shorter than the 5i20 otherwise they both have the same number of I/O.

7i48 needed muxed encoders, which were introduced almost a year ago:
git.linuxcnc.org/gitweb?p=emc2.git;a=com...3a87044bd62e1ade5326
7i44 is just a breakout from 50-pin header to 8x RG sockets.
7i64 support is in the 2.5 branch.
