You only need to connect 24vdc to the field power and jumper to get 5v from the host card (5i25).

The field power only needs to be connected to the top (-) and bottom (+) pins.

The I/O is not configurable, so nothing needs to be done in PnC except tell it what does what.

Well it will be a DC on the step and direction pins, the direction pins might be easier to see with a meter.

The first thing I do is cycle the I/O to make sure each switch/prox/input is connected and working. Assuming your using Axis from the Machine menu open up the Show HAL Configuration window and put the I/O pins you have connected in a watch window. Then cycle each one to make sure they work. Then I usually move on to one drive at a time and make sure they move the correct amount and direction... then homing if there are limit/homing switches.

field power V+ is the bottom pin of TB1 (well actually the bottom 4 pins)
its fairly safe to connect backwards _if_ you have a current limited
supply as it has a reverse protection diode but its not recomended

I dont trust my memory either, I trust the (new) manual a little bit,
but I went out and looked at the red and black wires on our test plug just to make sure...

If I want to supply external power, and have a 5V supply connected to Pins 5 and 8 as well, and have W1 and W2 set to the left, would that work as well?

I would also like to thank you both for being so helpful on this topic.

The system I'm converting from has +5V available inside it rather than off the PC. Or is getting 5V from the PC a better idea?
