Ah, I suppose I should have asked what kind of spindle motor it was.
Power tools typically use a brushed "Universal" motor These are effectively a DC motor which also works on AC (as the field coils and rotor coils both reverse at the same time on the negative-going half of the mains waveform). In that case a simple Triac "dimmer" ought to work. (though one intended for lighting might struggle with the inductive load that a motor is)
