OOPS! I found out you can damage an encoder with the 5v on the wrong pin. Luckily I have plenty of motors but looks like I might be able to repair it for a couple dollars.
The encoder's 26ls31 had a melt spot in the center.
My question is are there different types of 26ls31 chips? Do I need a high speed one? This encoder was 2,000 cpr.

A 26LS31 is a 26LS31, there is no "high speed" version. These things were used to stream serial disk
data in older hard drives, they are totally loafing on typical encoder signals. There are also 26C31
devices that are lower power. Just make sure you get the right format (DIP or SOIC).

I finally (after several years of toil, confusion, and smoke) fired up my drives and servo motors today and I have to report Success!
After a bit of work I have the amplifiers (AMC dc brush) with minimum drift and solid ready for control input.

This is where I jump and click my heels together in celebration. I took a big breath and no smell of burning electronics! :)

Now I am ready to troubleshoot the control signal before I start the tuning process.

Not 100% positive the wiring is proper at the Mesa 7i77.
I have two wires #3-GND and #4-AOUT going to my amplifiers - Ref IN and +Ref IN. for my X-Axis.

When I try to turn on AXIS I hear a click and it shuts off with a JOINT FOLLOWING ERROR.
I know at this stage I need to adjust the error settings to get more movement to work with before the FOLLOWING ERRORS trip.

Am I getting what I should at this stage?
When do I fire up Hal Scope? This has 1,000 options...Yikes!
Any recommended shortcuts and links to tuning?

Thanks. This is perfect.
I'm working your tutorial now.
Is there a way to verify my wiring and configuration is ready for tuning? I feel like I'm trying to tune a lawnmower that hasn't started yet if you know what I mean.

Update: Loaded the 3 pins in Halscope but no action of any sort.
I guess I'm back to Troubleshooting.

Are there some specific items I can check in the HAL Configuration SHOW list? There is so much stuff in here I need to narrow it down.

My halscope looks like a dead person in the hospital.
I have 4 lines but can't bring life to any of them.
I hit force but nothing.
Any suggestions on how to get something moving. I keep reading the Hal manual and tutorial but somehow overlooking the "ON" switch.

I usually use velocity as a trigger. You need a trigger to get a trace.
