Hello i am new to CNC and am very much interested in building a wood turning lathe for small ornamental projects. I have looked at maual rose engine lathes but i think that using CNC opens a whole new world of possibilities. I am a systems engineer by trade and have a good deal of Linux background. My question is where to start to gather information on components (motors, linear slides pillow blocks etc) thanks for taking the time to read my post and for any guidance you provide.

The first thing I would do is define the parameters of the machine. This will drive the selection process for the hardware.

How big of a piece of wood do you want to chuck up, how fast should the spindle turn, how fast should the X and Z axis move, how accurate should the tool move, do I need a spindle encoder for threading... etc.

As I recall wood has a pretty fast SFM compared to metals...

You might find www.deweygarrett.com/ interesting, as he is already doing ornamental turning with EMC.
