Need help on configuring a PC to run LinuxCNC for "The Creation Station Open Source CNC Router by Innovation Squared."

Any feedback most appreciated. This is what I'm now looking at:

Looks like an interesting project, but it is using kickstarter as a payment vehicle rather than enterprise funding.
No units have been dispatched yet, hope the product is as good as the presentation and that units are actually delivered.

Gigabyte LGA 1155 DDR3 1333 Intel H61 HDMI Micro ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS GA-H61M-HD2

Would not be my choice. Does not have a parport or header, does not have PCI slot only 1 x PCIe16 and 2 minis
Anything with UEFI BIOS is a negative, not a selling point, but getting hard to avoid.
Really looks best suited to a media server or something similar, are you going to be using a HDMI screen with your router?

Look at boards here
wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Latency-Test

PNY OPTIMA 2GB (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit DDR2 667 MHz PC2-5300 Desktop DIMM Memory Modules MD2048KD2-667

DDR 1333 board will not take DDR2 677 RAM, it won't fit and is the wrong voltage
If you have 2 slots and want 2GB, buy 1 x 2GB, otherwise to upgrade later you have to throw the 2 x 1GB away

Rosewill PCIe Parallel Card 1 Port Components Other RC-302E

Looks like it has a MosChip MS9900 chip so should be OK

regards

Thanks for the help!

Based on your notes it looks like the Gigabyte H61M-S2PV LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX 1333 Intel Motherboard will be a better choice - Yes?
+
Intel Pentium Dual Core G2030 LGA 1155 Processor BX80637G2030
+
Coolmax 300W M-ATX Power Supply CM-300

Do i understand correctly that instead of using the processor's graphics capability a graphics card is needed? If so, might you suggest one? (Will find a compatible monitor at local university surplus.)

2 users (or the same one twice) seem to have tested it with quite good latency - I personally have not tested one
It certainly has more realistic slots and ports, if you are looking at running a stepper powered machine, using software stepping.

Do i understand correctly that instead of using the processor's graphics capability a graphics card is needed?

Entirely depends on the video chip, there is no notes on the latency test to suggest that it was necessary with these boards, so should be no.

The notes do say the smi fix was necessary and isolcpus parameter used, so you will need to bone up on what that involves

Interested in what processor you plan to use.

my ram choice:
Crucial 4GB Kit (2GBx2) DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 Unbuffered UDIMM 240-Pin Desktop Memory Modules CT2CP25664BA1339

and for bluetooth/ wifi:
Gigabyte Bluetooth 4.0/WiFi Expansion Card Components Other GC-WB867D-I

any thumbs up or down on this helpful to me. (my first computer build)
