Linuxcnc configuration from scratch

I'm struggling to understand how to create a project configuration (ini, hal files) for a bipod plotter. I think I understand the kinematics concepts and I'm able to compile a module but I'm not sure how to reference it in my configuration.
Is there documentation for creating a project configuration? Or perhaps a template I can start with?
