The "HAL manual" and "Integrators manual"
(both downloadable from the documentation page)
are probably the best place to start

Information that is Mesa/hostmot2 specific can be found
in the hostmot2 manual, (man hostmot2) and various card manuals
Dynamic HAL pin names from sserial devices can be listed
with the Axis show HAL configuration commands or halcmd show pins/parameters

Btw. Can someone point me any guide where I can understand how to edit Mesa's supplied configs. Or where to start with these cards ?
I have a basic 5i25-7i77 configuration that you can build on.

To start with read the Mesa manuals and make sure field power is turned on before you try and load a config or you will not see any I/O pins.

Thanks for help PCW ! But I have checked in both computer and there is no hm2-servo directory in ~/linuxcnc/configs/ . I think I am missing any step.

John ! I will surely try to start with your linked configuration. Actually I am confused with the configuration. I know where to link which wires but getting difficulty to understand from where to start the configuration. I have inserted the 5i25 in pci slot and "lspci" shows "01:06.0 DPIO module: Device 2718:5125". But don't know what to do next.

Is there any step by step guide to install and configure these cards with linuxcnc ? Whether it's 5i20 or any mesa anything io cards. but at least it gives idea what to do next.

You saved my time again John ! I appreciate it !!! I was trying to load a configuration made with pncconf but it was giving me error and when I powered up the W1 and W2 connector, it works.

It may be that you need to install the hm2 firmware package to get the hm2 configuration directories
(I dont have a running liveCD version so Im not sure when that gets installed)
In any case you can make your own directory in ~/linuxcnc/configs and put the 5i25-7i77.ini and hm2-servo7i77.hal there

I am trying to search hostmot2 firmware for 5i25 but there is no firmware for 5i25. When I try "sudo apt-get install hostmot2-firmware (and press tab)" then it shows the following options.

hostmot2-firmware
hostmot2-firmware-5i22-1.5
hostmot2-firmware-3x20-1
hostmot2-firmware-5i23
hostmot2-firmware-4i65
hostmot2-firmware-7i43-2
hostmot2-firmware-4i68
hostmot2-firmware-7i43-4
hostmot2-firmware-5i20
hostmot2-firmware-all
hostmot2-firmware-5i22-1
