a free and powerful machine controller
A fresh bugfix release (Changelog). You can get it: as a source package from sourceforge, from Git, or as a precompiled package which works on Ubuntu as described here. |

The EMC2 team has a custom Live-CD (EU mirror) based on Ubuntu 8.04 with emc 2.3.x included, that will let you try out EMC2 before installing, and it's also the easiest way to install Ubuntu and EMC2 together. (more) |

I am new to the LINUX and EMC2 world. I am 63 and have a heart condition and take a lot of medication. As a result it is difficult for me to learn and retain new things. I have some questions that hopefully help me to see if I want to try to transfer to LINUX / EMC from the WIN XP and MACH3 world.
The reason to change is I have 3 CNC systems that I want to have working to make money. There fore I would have to purchase 2more Licenses of XP and MACH3 to be legle. LINUX and EMC2 would save me $350.00 plus in license fees.
Questions:
Can I network say 2 or more linux based machines to gether with 1 or more XP machines to transfer files or would I be better to use USB thumb drives to transfer files between them?
I have several people who want me to help them build or convert a machine to CNC. 2 of them are familiar with LINUX, theother has little computer system experience other the Email, word, etc. This 3rd person has a Bridgeport mill that he wants to convert.
The one thing we have in common is a shortage of money to just go out and buy a ready made kit to convert or buy a machine.
I am hoping this forum will bet helpful.

Bob,
It sounds like you have everything you need. Get together the people who know Linux and the people who understand how to run a mill and you can start converting.
Depending on how many files you need to transfer you can easily transfer them with a USB memory stick.
You can also install with a dual boot on your legal machine and have all your files available to EMC.
The first thing to do if you have not already is to download and run the live-cd disc in demo mode and become comfortable with it.
